Preventing DUIs

Law Blog

No one sets out to get a DUI, but even well-meaning people can misjudge their ability to drive after having a few drinks. Often, your friends may not realize that you are under the influence, so the old adage "Friends don't let friends drive drunk" is not always helpful. After all, you may have a low tolerance for alcohol, have not eaten recently, or are taking a prescription that doesn't mix with alcohol. These factors are not visible to others, so you need to use other techniques to make certain you do not drive when you shouldn't.

Breathalyzers

You can always have your car fitted with an ignition interlock, a device that measures the level of alcohol in your system. If you are over the limit for safe driving, your car will not start. Although these devices are mandated for many repeat DUI offenders, they are also a way to make sure no one drives drunk. If this step seems too drastic for you, consider investing in a personal breathalyzer. Experts stress that these devices are not foolproof and that you should never drink and drive, they are an aid to determining your fitness to get behind the wheel. The quality of these devices varies greatly, so do your research before buying one.

Ride Sharing

Ride-sharing services have been touted as a way to reduce drunk driving deaths, in large part because they are cheaper than taxis. Theoretically, people would be more likely to call for the more affordable ride-share and not drive drunk. A recent study has shown that this notion is not true, probably because drunk people are not logical and frequently overestimate their ability to drive. You can make ride-sharing keep you safe, however, if you use as transportation to your destination. If you are without a vehicle, you cannot drive. Since these services are affordable, using them to get to and from your destination makes sense. Plus, you do not have to retrieve your own vehicle the next day.

You can still give your keys to someone else, but that strategy only works if the designated person doesn't drink and has the will to refuse you if you ask for your keys back. The best way to avoid driving drunk is to make it impossible to do so. If you don't want to take those steps, at least invest in your own personal breathalyzer. Otherwise, you may need the number of a good DUI attorney.

Creating A Solid Defense

When it comes to fighting in court, it isn't always easy to stay strong, stable, and secure in your convictions. Fortunately, by working with a great lawyer, things become much easier. About ten years ago now, I was accused of a crime that I didn't commit, and it was really heartbreaking. I started thinking about what to do, and a friend of mine suggested working with a great lawyer. It was incredible to see how much help the lawyer was, and within a few months, I was proven innocent. This blog is here to help people who might be fighting legal battles of their own.
