4 Questions to Ask a Personal Injury Attorney in an Initial Consultation

Law Blog

When you're injured as a result of another party's negligence, you may be entitled to financial compensation. This compensation can help to cover medical expenses, lost wages, and other costs related to your injury. Any time you're looking to seek damages from a personal injury suit, however, it's a good idea to work with an experienced attorney on your side.

As you consult with personal injury attorneys in your area, then, there are a few important questions worth asking to help you find the right fit for your case.

Do I Have a Case? What Is It Worth?

An honest and experienced personal injury attorney should be able to review the details of your case and determine how strong of a case you have. This will require you to bring along any documentation you have to your first consultation, such as copies of medical bills, witness statements from your accident, and the like. A knowledgeable attorney should also be able to give you a ballpark range of how much your case is realistically worth.

What Is Your Experience with Similar Cases?

Ideally, you will want to work with an attorney who has specific experience with cases similar to yours. For example, if you were injured in an accident where your vehicle was struck by a semitruck, then you'll be best served by an attorney who has worked extensively with semitruck accident victims in the past.

What Types of Fees Do You Charge?

Personal injury attorneys can vary quite a bit in the types of fees they charge for their services. Some will require an up-front retainer, whereas others may not collect any fees until your case is won and a settlement is reached.

How Long Will My Case Take to Settle?

There is no way your attorney will be able to guarantee your case will be settled by a specific date, but most should be able to give you a general timeframe on how long you can expect your case to drag on. Keep in mind that it is not uncommon for personal injury cases to take months or even years to settle; a lot of this is dependent on the court system.

These are just a few of the most important questions worth asking a personal injury attorney as you schedule free consultations. From there, you can get a better idea of which attorney will best suit your needs.

Creating A Solid Defense

When it comes to fighting in court, it isn't always easy to stay strong, stable, and secure in your convictions. Fortunately, by working with a great lawyer, things become much easier. I started thinking about what to do, and a friend of mine suggested working with a great lawyer. It was incredible to see how much help the lawyer was, and within a few months, I was proven innocent. This blog is here to help people who might be fighting legal battles of their own.
